To Be Still
At the beginning of 2017, my friend Robyn and I spent about a week at a lake house tucked deep in the middle of nowhere of Northeast Georgia. We were surrounded by the sound of rain drops flooding the leaves on the front porch, misty mountain fog lurking from the mountain range close by, and the sweet stench of freshly mowed farm land, lake water and rain. What we had planned on being a girl’s lake week ended up being the two of us, stormy weather, scarce cell phone service, and a ton of time to simply read our bibles, sit in the presence of God, and to ponder the mysteries of his nature together. Any other may have considered those days anticlimactic, a bore even, but I tell you, those days have been imprinted on my heart for eternity. There is something so powerful about truly getting away from everything you know and simply sitting in the silence of it all. Sitting, resting, being still. You would be surprised how loud the silence speaks. Those quiet moments, sitting on the living room floor with bibles, journals, hearts, eyes, and ears wide open. Those are the still, quiet moments that have spoken the loudest volumes to my soul. This is how Robyn and I began our new year. We simply sat and listened, tuning our hearts to hear from God, and waiting with expectancy as he began to speak to us. This truly set the tone for my year as I cannot soon forget the words of life the Father spoke to me in those days. I mustn’t ever forget the places I have gone with Papa God in my heart- I must treasure and cherish these still small moments where he speaks a multitude of his heart over me. Find this place and posture your heart toward it even in the midst of your normal crazy schedule. Find it- cherish it – protect it. Let it shape you. Let it shape your crazy “reality” into a life lived from a place of rest. Let him speak to you in the still, small moments; they may very well become the big ones.
“And he said, ‘Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.’ And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.” 1 Kings 19:11-12
p.s. we decided to take a walk one day and found an abandoned house with newspapers that dated from the 1930s! This was the result of our fun little find. Enjoy !
